Women’s Day 2021 at the St. Pölten UAS

With a comprehensive range of offers on the occasion of the International Women’s Day 2021, the St. Pölten UAS takes important steps towards promoting gender equality.

In technical realms in particular, a number of programming courses for women represent an effort to set new tones in traditionally male-dominated domains. The career fair “erfolgreich.bewerben” offers job application coachings and advice especially for women, while the Works Council calls attention to the problem of the gender pay gap.

Information and Education

Not only on the International Women’s Day on 8 March, the St. Pölten UAS informs and advises students, prospective students and staff members on the topic of gender equality. “Our offers and initiatives aim to empower women in male-dominated areas of work and research. We attach high priority to the entire range of programming courses and coding workshops throughout the year”, emphasises Ulrike Wieländer, Gender & Diversity Officer at the St. Pölten UAS.

Focus on Digitalisation

For a stronger presence of women in the so-called STEM disciplines (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) in particular, the introduction to and integration of women into the world of programming play a major role.

“With initiatives such as Code4Girls, the Creative Coding Labs and Coding Weeks for apprentices, we can take targeted measures to promote women in technology and science”, says Wieländer.

Marlies Temper and Kerstin Blumenstein, Academic Directors of the study programmes Data Science & Business Analytics and Media Technology, respectively, talk about measures and framework conditions that help women get started in the world of technology.

Connecting Minds, Empowering Potential

The information event erfolgreich.bewerben (on how to successfully apply for a job) took place against the background of the International Women’s Day once more. This year’s motto was “Connecting minds. Empowering Potential“. For example, the workshop “Blicke, Bemerkungen, Benachteiligung: Was tun bei Sexismus?“ (“Looks, remarks, disadvantage: what to do in case of sexism?”) provided tips and instructions on how to deal with sexism in the workplace.

Works Council Promotes Exchange

Like every year, the Works Council took the Women’s Day as an occasion to present the St. Pölten UAS’ income report with a focus on the gender pay gap. The presentation is followed by an online general meeting in which all staff members are invited to participate and share their views and experiences.
